Library Access

We are 99% finished in the renovation and have now re-opened. Who can use the library?

• Current Hastings students can of course use the library during regular library hours.

• Members of the California Bar, Hastings alumni, and law students from other law schools may use the library whenever it is open (including evening and weekend hours). Library hours are listed here. These library patrons are required to sign-in at the first floor Security Desk after showing appropriate ID, and then they will be issued a visitor pass good for that day.

• The general public may use the Hastings Law Library from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm Monday through Friday. All library visitors are required to show a state-issued ID and to sign-in at the first floor Security Desk. Visiting library patrons will be issued a visitor's pass good for that day, if they can state a valid reason for entering the library. Visitor passes must be worn at all times while in Hastings' buildings. The Security Desk cannot issue visitor passes to members of the general public for evening and weekend access.

Still Moving...

Can you believe it? We are still unpacking boxes, unloading carts, and moving into the Library. It's a very slow process but it's coming along. The NewCal copy center has moved into their nice, large room on the 4th floor and they are getting ready to open for business. It's almost time to start printing up the orientation packets...

4th Floor Shelving Now Installed

Shelving on the 4th floor of the Library has been installed and our workers are getting dusty from unpacking all the boxes of Federal Registers that have been in storage for the past two years. Other items being moved onto the 4th floor are the new computers for the lab, the re-vamped reference collection, the renamed Research Alcove collection, and a newly created popular reading area.

The items chosen for the popular reading area were selected from a poll we did last spring. Titles were chosen based solely on student input. We are pleased with the new collection and hope the incoming students like what the current and departing students selected!

200 Building Re-Occupation

All Library staff have moved back into the 200 Building and believe it or not, sometimes we get lost in the new space! There are hallways where there didn't used to be, bookshelves where there used to be storage rooms, and seating for students where there used to be offices. The books are still being moved in to their places on the bookshelves. We don't expect the new furniture for another couple of weeks yet. It seems like we are still on schedule for our Fall Re-Opening. More photos to come later.

Removing Books from Storage

This is one of the rooms we've been using to store books during the renovation. The books were arranged on shelves in the same order as they would be in an open library. When a student or faculty member needed a book, they would fill out a form, or request the title online, and a staff member would "page" the book from these shelves.

The wooden cart, with 3 shelves on each side, is filled with books and then shrink-wrapped for transport to the new library.

The Move is Beginning

The 5th and 6th floors of 200 McAllister are complete, the 4th floor is still in progress. Last week we received a shipment of books that had been placed in deep storage back in the summer of 2005. These books, boxed and on pallets, await the movers who will start taking them to 200 next week.

We are starting the move with items slated for the 6th floor. If all goes well, we will add items slated for the 5th floor the following week and have two streams of books being moved at once. The book carts will be color-coded so it will be easy to see at a glance which books go where.

The Books: They Are A-Movin'

For the entire time the Library has been in temporary quarters, work within the Technical Services Department of the Library has continued. This means that new books, journals, microfiche and reporter volumes have been selected, ordered, received and catalogued. Since we didn't have much extra space in the First Floor Library and since there also wasn't any room in our temporary storage, the new acquisitions had to go somewhere - hence a new location was created called NMSTK for New Materials Stacks.

Now, we have to start coordinating our move back into the soon-to-be completed Library and the books will need to be moved from the First Floor Library, from the Gold Reading Room, from temporary storage at 50 UN Plaza, and from the New Materials Stacks. This may be confusing for our Library users and the Reference staff is committed to helping you find the books you need.

Basically, materials with call numbers A-G and L-Z are in the First Floor Library and call numbers H-KZ and P-PZ must be requested from storage. Please ask for assistance at the Reference Desk.

Library News

The shelving for books in the renovated library is currently being installed. In order to do this, they have to bolt the frame and brace through the carpeting to the concrete below. Once those are in, the book shelves get attached to the uprights. So far, uprights are installed on half of the 6th floor. The next stage which is to install the shelves will take place in the next week or two.

On the 5th floor, the shelving layout is in progress. Various codes control the spacing and methods of securing the shelving so that's where careful measuring and planning come in to play.

Meanwhile in our temporary offices, temp workers have been hired to help us with the move. Stay Tuned!

Renovation Update & Request for Student Input

The renovation of the 200 McAllister library is going well. The renovated library is going to be a great addition to the Hastings campus. The newly designed study spaces will be popular with students who like to work collaboratively in study rooms or alone in carrels.

There will be also be a new leisure reading area with newspapers and popular magazines in the renovated library. What magazines would you like to see in this area? Give us your input so we can decide what to buy. Do you want to read news magazines or speciality magazines about food, travel, fashion, or music? Give us your suggestions (specific magazine titles please) by emailing the Bloggy Notion or by using the suggestion box at the First Floor Library Circulation Desk.

First Floor Library & Gold Reading Room Info

The First Floor Library will close permanently on the Monday following commencement (May 21, 2007) so that we can prepare for moving back into the 200 McAllister Library. The Gold Reading Room will remain open for most of the summer.

As for the renovated library, it is looking very nice these days. Carpeting has been installed on all three library floors. The new lights are bright, and doors and windows have been installed in the study rooms. Window-seating study areas have also been set up. It should be any day now that the shelving goes back in. The tentative date to start moving the library is June 1st, and we are planning to re-open in August. Check back during the summer for updates on the progress.

Locating Books in our Collection

In order to make our move back in to the 200 building more efficient, we are beginning to reorganize the collections in the First Floor Library. Many of the materials with the call numbers H, J, and K have been moved. If you can't find what you're looking for, please ask a Reference Librarian.

First Floor Library Changes Continue

As we begin preparations to move back into 200 McAllister, the library staff has begun reorganizing the collection.
Students looking for items in the call number range KF1 - KF 3200 (approximately the position of Milgrim on Trade Secrets, should also browse along the west wall (the Hyde Street street). This is where the books are being stored while they're being processed for the move.

If you have any problems locating an item, please ask someone at the Reference Desk for assistance.

"Where Have All the Shepard’s® Gone?"

The Shepard’s® are now located in the front of the Circulation Desk. The Federal set is on the left side, and the California and the Pacific Reporter sets are on the right side next to the Witkin's®. We have changed the location of other sets of books in preparation for the eventual move back to the 200 building. Here are more changes:

* The Pacific Reporter volumes have been placed in storage. You can get .pdf versions from this database on Westlaw.
* Exams were moved to the Gold Reading Room in Alcove 3. Exams are also online at the library website.
* The Pacific Digest is now in between the California Statutes and Amendments to the Code and the California Regulations towards the back of the First Floor Library.
* The Restatements are now in the Gold Reading Room in Alcove 12.

As we continue to change things around, we will keep you posted.

Library Renovation Update

We recently heard that renovation of the 200 McAllister Building is 50 percent complete and so far it is almost on time. It is expected that the Library will start moving books back into our new space over the summer 2007, and we have been told that "the building will be ready before school starts for fall 2007." For an update on the construction and to view photos showing the progress, visit the College's Renovation Webpage.
