Noise & Food in the Library and Gold Reading Room

There have been repeated complaints about the noise level in the Law Library and Gold Reading Room. As we head toward the exam period, please be considerate of others and keep conversations to a minimum.

Additionally, there has been a problem with food, drink, and related waste being brought into the library and not properly discarded. Food is prohibited in the library. You may bring bottled water and other covered drinks into the library (but not into the computer lab).

Thanks for your cooperation.

Power outlets on the 4th Floor

power.jpg

Additional power outlets have been installed in the 4th Floor Reading Room by the McAllister St window in response to student requests (thanks for the suggestion). There are now plenty of outlets available for the window seats. However, they are not so easy to find (see photo below). So look between the window and the back edge of the counter for these outlets.

Food & Drink in the New Library

To keep our new Library nice and clean and free of creatures who don't read, the policy allows drinks only in covered containers. There are some covered drink containers available at the Reference Desk if you need one. No food is allowed in the Library.

Power Outlets in the Library

The drilling and hammering sounds you hear in the Library are the study tables being constructed. Once installed most will have power connections available. In the meantime, power outlets can be found in the study rooms and in the window seating at the columns.

Basic Layout of the Library's 4th Floor

Upon arriving at the 4th floor, turn right out of the elevators and enter the Library. Directly ahead of you is the Circulation desk and to the right of that is Reference desk. Reference hours are Monday - Friday 8:30 A.M. - 5:30 P.M., Saturday 9:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M..

Toward McAllister Street, there is waist-high shelving holding the 4th Floor Reading Room collection. The open space nearby has lots of light, comfy chairs, with good visibility to be able to meet up with friends or perhaps study in groups. Peruse the subscription magazines in the Popular Reading Area for a little light reading.

Continuing around in a clockwise direction, you will encounter the computer lab. This is the place to check your email, search online resources or take care of printing and scanning. Further down the hallway and through two doors is the NewCal Copy Center. This is run by two terrific folks who will help you with copy card purchases or jammed printers.

Beyond their office the Federal collection begins with book stack number 1. Congressional Record, Federal Register, US Reports, regional reporters and the like are found in these stacks which circle around to Golden Gate Avenue.

As you near the Hyde Street side of the building, the California collection begins and includes sets such as Deering's, West's, Statutes and Amendments to the Code, etc. The area from stack one to this point is called "4th Stacks."

The few stacks near the foot of the Grand Stairway contain our small Research Alcove Collection. This consists of current treatises and practice materials that do not leave the Library.

A small room near there is where you will find our microfiche and microfilm collection. If the machines are giving you any problems whatsoever, just ask for help at the Reference desk, our job is to help you.

6th Floor of the Renovated Library

When the book movers left today there were only a few more bookcarts left to be shelved on the 6th floor. This means they'll be starting on the 5th floor sometime tomorrow. The move is going well, and it's nice to have all our books back together again. Some have been in deep storage and are very dusty. Others were in the 50 UN Plaza building, and the rest were in the now permanently closed First Floor Library. It's good to have space for everything.

All Campus Read on March 2nd

Tired of reading textbooks and want to read something with implications for your future? There are two copies of Unbending Gender: why family and work conflict and what to do about it by Professor Joan Williams available at the Circulation Desk in the First Floor Library. They can be checked out for one week. This will give you enough time to finish reading the book before the discussion that will take place on Friday, March 2 at 12:40 in room A.

The library has additional copies that can be retrieved from our storage space. Just click here to pull it up in the library's online catalog and let us know you want it by clicking the Request button. Books that we bring from storage can be checked out for one month.

Using the Law Library

When it comes to using the Law Library, do you feel uncertain? Confused? Frustrated? If so, you are not alone. One of the Hastings Reference Librarians has worked here for more than 30 years. Can you imagine how many students she's helped? They ALL had to learn to use the Law Library. They were all uncertain, confused and frustrated at times, and that's why the Reference Librarians are here -- to help YOU with your research. Call, visit, or email the Reference Department. No questions are too small, no request too obscure.

InterLibrary Loan Requests

The Hastings Law Library Interlibrary Loan Service supports the instructional and research needs of UC Hastings students, faculty and staff by obtaining materials which are not available at the UC Hastings library. Two to three weeks after you submit a request either online or in paper, you will get a notice in your SIC folder alerting you that the book or article has arrived. Once you've received the notice, come to the Library Circulation Desk to collect the book.

Library Renovation Update

We recently heard that renovation of the 200 McAllister Building is 50 percent complete and so far it is almost on time. It is expected that the Library will start moving books back into our new space over the summer 2007, and we have been told that "the building will be ready before school starts for fall 2007." For an update on the construction and to view photos showing the progress, visit the College's Renovation Webpage.

Romeo and Juliet.gov

The U.S. Census put together a webpage of fun statistics about Valentine’s Day: Nebraska and Texas are the two states in the union that have towns called “Valentine”, and you can find the town of “Romeo” in both Colorado and Michigan. Interestingly enough, even though there are 3,961 candy stores in the U.S., this country annually imports more than $420 million of chocolate from Canada.
